Evidence for the scrinium of the Roman Church, which was both a library and an archive, goes back as far as the fourth century. In the sixth century it was placed under the primicerius notariorum, and at the end of the eighth century, the first Cardinal Librarian of the Holy Roman Church was named, who also played the role of chancellor. For reasons which are still unclear, the earliest papal libraries and archives were dispersed in the first half of the thirteenth century. The new collections gathered by the thirteenth-century Popes, which can be reconstructed thanks to an inventory made under Boniface VIII, were moved after his death in 1303 first to Perugia, then to Assisi, and finally to Avignon, a process which involved considerable losses. In Avignon, John XXII began to gather a new library, which became part of the collection of the Borghese family in the seventeenth century and returned to the Holy See in 1891

Çudira të shekullit të 16-të – Orthodhoksia
Nga Historia e Orthodhoksisë Lindore mësojmë këto qyfyre :

History of the Orthodox Churchwww.goarch.org/en/ourfaith/articles/article7053... Islam not only recognized Jesus as a great prophet, but tolerated Christians as another People of the Book.

it is striking that the patriarch's and the hierarchy's position was considerably strengthened and their power increased. They were endowed with civil as well as ecclesiastical power over all Christians in Ottoman territories.

It is this geographical and intellectual confinement which, in part, explains Orthodoxy's silence during the Reformation in sixteenth century Europe. That this important theological debate should often seem distorted to the Orthodox is not surprising: they never took part in it. And yet, it is not the isolation alone, but the consequences of Ottoman rule that make these pages of Church history so bleak from virtually every point of view.

The Church of Serbia, which had lost its patriarchate in the Turkish period, became autocephalous in 1879, and its primate was recognized as patriarch by Constantinople in 1922. Romania, today the largest self-governing Church after Russia, was declared autocephalous in 1885 and became a patriarchate in 1925. Finally, the Church of Bulgaria declared itself autocephalous in 1860, but it was not until 1945 that Constantinople recognized it; its metropolitan in Sofia assumed the title of patriarch in 1953.

in 1789 50% of the French people didn't speak it at all, and only 12 to 13% spoke it 'fairly' - in fact, even in oïl language zones, out of a central region, it wasn't usually spoken except in cities, and, even there, not always in the faubourgs [approximatively translatable to "suburbs"]. In the North as in the South of France, almost nobody spoke French."[8]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_French#Modern_French
